The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv has issued an urgent warning about a possible significant air attack on November 20. In response to the threat, the Embassy will remain closed for the day and has advised all U.S. citizens in Ukraine to remain vigilant and prepared. If an air alert is announced, citizens should be ready to immediately seek shelter.

This warning comes amid persistent Russian missile and drone strikes targeting various regions of Ukraine, including the capital. These attacks continue to strain essential infrastructure, leading to frequent power outages, heating disruptions, and interruptions to municipal services. The Embassy urges all U.S. nationals to prepare for such eventualities by ensuring they have sufficient reserves of water, food, medications, and other essential supplies to sustain them through potential emergencies.

Ukraine has endured relentless Russian aggression since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. In recent months, Moscow has intensified its targeting of energy and critical infrastructure, especially as winter approaches. The heightened frequency of attacks has placed immense pressure on Ukraine’s defense systems, and civilians are increasingly bearing the brunt of these offensives.

While Ukrainian air defense forces have successfully intercepted many incoming missiles and drones, the scale and intensity of the attacks present ongoing risks to urban centers. Kyiv, in particular, has been a frequent target, and the potential for further strikes underscores the precarious security situation for residents and foreign nationals alike.

In light of these developments, the U.S. State Department continues to strongly advise against travel to Ukraine. For those already in the country, maintaining emergency readiness is critical. This includes having a well-stocked emergency kit, staying informed of local air raid alerts, and identifying nearby shelters.

The Embassy has reminded U.S. citizens to monitor updates through official channels, including local authorities, and to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive timely alerts and emergency guidance.

With the threat of a major airstrike looming, residents of Kyiv and other vulnerable areas face the dual challenge of preparing for immediate dangers while enduring ongoing hardships caused by infrastructure disruptions. The international community continues to condemn Russia’s attacks, highlighting the need for sustained support for Ukraine in its struggle against aggression.

As the situation evolves, U.S. citizens are urged to remain cautious, proactive, and connected to reliable sources of information.
